A positive mental vocabulary inspires right action...and that produces good people, committed athletes, and excellence in the moment. The philosophical text, "See it; Believe it; Do it." is our mantra and motto. As a coach and competitor for over 40 years, and parent of 26 years to 7 aspiring bright-spirits, I have encountered these questions during my efforts to help my children navigate the turbulent emotions that arise from their effort to achieve victory -- and not be overwhelmed by the agony of defeat: What do I say? How much do I say? When do I say it? How do I help? The answers have been combined with basic playing card games that invite interaction but can also provide the quiet time of individual reflection. The positive text of Pro Zone Player's Cards originated in the belief that something needed to be done today to help build confidence, positive imagery and encourage the right attitude in players - in both life and sports. The philosophy of the words and phrases that have proven invaluable in building the personal traits of a successful person over the years, are the same needed to encourage a successful athlete. How often have you wanted to give all the answers to someone you love? Tell them how to do it, how to avoid the pain of trial and error? But “telling” does not always lead to learning and even learning requires a process that includes making the wrong choices. I created the Pro Zone Playing Cards because I wanted my children, my students, to "see" the philosophical text which can help them learn to believe in themselves. An "I can do it" philosophy results in action. Hence our motto: See it; Believe it; Do it. “Homework” didn’t sell the idea. Dad “telling” them was–well, Dad telling them. The “game” became finding the vehicle to help them grow without the imperative of “listen to me”. The option to say “go play cards”, “let’s play cards”, “review your cards” was a welcomed alternative for all. Telling became sharing, and sharing became learning without effort . They play cards because it's fun. They play sports because they have come to value the process as much as the result. When using these sports cards, the phrases that guide, reinforce character and support personal strength are "seen". "Belief" will follow as performance improves at home, school and in sports. A parent once asked me: “What can I do? What can I say?” I promised them I would put to paper what has worked. The origin of the Pro Zone Playing Cards was flash cards called “smart cards”...because it was a smart thing to review them. I changed them to the playing cards format to encourage “play” and learning at the same time. I wanted to turn a child’s “down time” into “up time”. Cards are great companions. They are easily carried in a sports bag, car or at home. The "Zone” is accessible to each of us. It is a state of mind and being. All ages can benefit from using the cards.
